How do we make maps and local history collections even more engaging, accessible and relevant? And how can we use these materials to tell new stories about the places where we live?

We’ll be joined by experts in cultural mapping, Dr Cristina Kiminami and Dr Robert Harland from Loughborough University, whose research focuses on everyday urban heritage in our villages, towns and cities.

They will showcase a number of co-created projects that explore urban heritage in visually compelling ways, featuring the Loughborough Stories platform, a series of digital StoryMaps that combine stories, maps, videos, photographs, documents, local history material and more.

We’ll hear about how the University worked with Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteer Group to support the volunteers in creating a digital map and walking tour of Loughborough’s Medieval past – and the further heritage themes that followed. This has been a successful example of local history and archive collections used and reimagined through accessible digital platforms.

This webinar will be of interest to local studies librarians, archivists, volunteers and more broadly to anyone interested in exploring storytelling and community engagement with urban heritage within the library, heritage and cultural sector.
