How can you ensure learning-disabled people feel included and a feel a sense of belonging in your library? Physical accessibility - such as ramps, hearing loops, and disabled toilets - is hugely important, but what about once someone is in your library space? How can we expand accessibility and inclusivity to go ‘Beyond Ramps’?
Based on the work of Dr Melissa Kirby and the Purple Research Group at Purple Patch Arts, this session will help you to understand how to be an ‘Accessible Person’ and how social interactions are a key element in creating a safe and supportive environment for learning-disabled people. It will explore some of the barriers learning-disabled people may face on a day-to-day basis, the characteristics of an accessible person, and top tips about how to put these characteristics into practice.
The session will be delivered using Purple Patch Arts’ innovative and creative approach, which uses arts-based activities, inclusive teaching methods and supportive environments to enable participants to experience their own ‘purple patch’ – a space where they feel safe, happy, and can thrive.
