As part of our ongoing sustainability series we’re exploring how Wakefield Libraries have become a core pillar of Wakefield Council’s sustainability strategy.
The webinar will chart Wakefield’s sustainability journey, from Wakefield Council’s Declaration of Climate Change Emergency in 2019 and subsequent development of a Climate Change Action Plan, to how Wakefield Libraries have implemented impactful sustainable practices across their 12 sites.
From community engagement to local transport initiatives to waste management, Wakefield have embedded sustainable practices into their service. Moreover, in 2022 they were awarded a CILIP Green Libraries grant to support and develop their green initiatives.
The session will explore a range of Wakefield’s initiatives such as -
- Establishing community gardens and seed libraries across library sites
- Partnering with local waste management company Renewi to establish recycling banks at libraries and distribute reusable products to residents such as Real Nappies
- Setting up cycle repair stations to encourage sustainable transport options for staff and customers
- Working with the Woodland Trust on popular tree giveaway initiatives
