Sound recordings are significant records of creative and cultural expression, and can be found throughout our archives and special collections. As well as being valuable research material they are important and engaging resources for exhibitions, outreach and learning events.
If you want to use sound recordings from your collections it is important to understand how copyright legislation might affect this. In this webinar Stephanie will give a brief introduction to copyright in sound recordings, specifically in music and oral history interviews. We will look at the different ways they can be used in your library – in exhibitions, onsite events and for private study.
We will look at-
- the layers of copyright that exist in sound recordings
- who owns this copyright and how long it lasts
- licences and permissions to use in-copyright sound recordings
- the concept of ‘fair dealing’ and some exceptions to copyright
